Using existing methods to change a boat engine oil filter, it can be difficult, if not impossible, to avoid spilling waste oil into your boat and in many cases into the environment. This can be especially difficult if the boat’s filter is oriented vertically with the openings facing down or if the filter is mounted horizontally. When removing the filter, any leftover oil will likely leak out into strategically placed absorbent pads around the filter, engine and the bottom of the bilge. In many cases, it is not feasible to position a collection container under the oil filter to catch the spill.
The IP Link is pursuing a licensee for a patented tool that eliminates spills, messes, environmental contamination, wasted time, and frustration when changing a marine oil filter. This tool attaches securely to the oil filter, punctures the old filter, and creates a vacuum seal that forcibly removes all the oil from the filter. Although initially designed for marine applications, this invention is also useful in a wide range of industries including aircraft, motorcycles, automotive, and applications where spin-on oil, diesel fuel and hydraulic fluid filters are used.
This tool has been successfully manufactured and sold in small quantities over the past three years. The patent owner is looking to expand sales through a partnership with an established market leader.
